Baseball: Six Catholic teams reach CIF-SS quarterfinals

Six Catholic school teams have advanced to the quarterfinals of the CIF-Southern Section Baseball Tournament after second round victories May 7.

Santa Margarita (Division 2), Serra (D-3), Mary Star (D-4), Salesian (D-5), St. Anthony (D-6) and Don Bosco Tech (D-7) will be in action May 10. All are seeking to become the first Catholic school CIF-SS baseball champion since Santa Margarita (D-1) and Bishop Amat (D-3) won titles in 2014 (La Salle was D-3 runner-up in 2018).

Second round results, with season-ending CIF-SS divisional rankings where applicable:

• Division 1: No. 6 Notre Dame and Bishop Amat both were edged 2-1 by Mira Costa and Huntington Beach, respectively.

• Division 2: No. 9 Santa Margarita defeated No. 8 Damien, 4-2; St. Bonaventure lost 3-1 to No. 10 Norco. In the quarterfinals, Santa Margarita (23-11) hosts El Segundo (19-8).

• Division 3: Serra (18-11) edged Saugus 3-2, and next plays at No. 9 Yorba Linda (19-9).

• Division 4: No. 7 Mary Star outscored Sunny Hills 11-5, but No. 3 St. Paul was edged 3-2 by Loara. Mary Star (23-7) hosts No. 2 Summit (19-6) in the quarterfinals.

• Division 5: Salesian (16-11) defeated No. 8 Pomona 7-2, and hosts Orange Vista (16-12) in the quarterfinals.

• Division 6: No. 6 St. Anthony (14-12) ousted Rowland 8-1, advancing to play No. 3 Faith Baptist (18-1).

• Division 7: Don Bosco Tech (13-7) outslugged No. 3 University Prep 12-7 for the right to play No. 10 Marshall (14-8).

In addition to Bishop Amat and Santa Margarita, Catholic school CIF-SS baseball champions in the past decade include Crespi (D-2, 2009), Mater Dei (D-1, 2010), Bishop Amat (D-4, 2011) and Serra (D-3, 2013). Besides La Salle last year, recent Catholic school CIF-SS runners-up are Paraclete (D-5, 2012), St. Anthony (D-6, 2015) and Cantwell-Sacred Heart (D-5, 2016).
