Volleyball: League-leader showdowns highlight week’s action

Important matchups among league leaders highlight this week’s girls’ volleyball action among local Catholic schools.

In the Sunshine League, Louisville High School (17-7 overall), still No. 1 in the current CIF-Southern Section Division 2A poll, faced No. 10 Alemany (14-5) on Oct. 14 (after press time; see results online) in a battle of league leaders. Alemany was 3-0, Louisville 2-0 in Sunshine League play heading into the match.

In the Mission League, Notre Dame/Sherman Oaks (8-2, 1-0 in league) played at Marymount (9-5, 1-0) on Oct. 14. Both schools are just ahead of Flintridge Sacred Heart Academy (11-4, 1-1).

Another Oct. 14 matchup found St. Genevieve at Mary Star, both teams 3-0 in the Santa Fe League and just ahead of St. Pius-St. Matthias Academy (2-1). And in the Tri-County League, St. Bonaventure (11-2, 5-1 in league) visited La Reina (15-5, 6-0) in an Oct. 16 battle of league leaders, with La Reina having won the earlier match in Ventura.

The Oct. 13 Division 1AA poll again was dominated by Catholic teams: Mater Dei (3), Marymount (5), Flintridge Sacred Heart (6), Santa Margarita (7) and Notre Dame/Sherman Oaks (10). Santa Margarita is 21-4 overall, Mater Dei 19-10.

The 4AA rankings also showed Catholic school strength, with St. Paul (20-2, 4-0 in the Camino Real League) ranking second after 12 straight wins heading into an Oct. 14 match at St. Joseph/Lakewood. La Reina is third, St. Bonaventure fourth and St. Anthony (also on a roll at 15-4, 2-1 in Camino Real League) eighth.

In 2AA, Mayfield (8-4, 3-2 in Prep League play) received honorable mention. Honorable mention teams in Division 4A included Horizon League schools San Gabriel Mission (10-6, 3-0 and atop the league), Bishop Conaty-Our Lady of Loretto and Ramona Convent.

Also enjoying noteworthy seasons are Bishop Montgomery, 9-2 overall and atop the Del Rey League at 3-0, and St. Monica Academy, 9-3-2 overall and 6-0 in leading the International League.

Bishop Amat tops cross country

Bishop Amat remains atop the boys’ and girls’ cross country rankings in the CIF-SS weekly Division 4 poll released Oct. 13. A look at the current polls:

Girls’ Cross Country: Mater Dei is tenth in Division 3. The Division 4 poll includes Bishop Amat (1) J.Serra (3), Rosary (4), La Salle (8), Notre Dame/Sherman Oaks (9) and La Reina (10). Mayfield leads Division 5, with Sacred Heart fifth.

Boys’ Cross Country: Loyola continued to be second in Division 1, while St. John Bosco advanced to sixth in Division 3. Division 4 rankings included Bishop Amat (1), Cathedral (5), Salesian (6) and J.Serra (8), and St. Bonaventure was sixth in Division 5.

Girls’ Tennis: Santa Margarita was eighth in Division 1; La Reina, ninth in Division 2; and St. Lucy’s Priory, third in Division 4.

Boys’ Water Polo: Mater Dei was second in Division 1, followed by Loyola (3), Servite (7), Santa Margarita (10). In Division 2, Damien was seventh.
