The St. Sebastian Sports Project’s (SSSP) annual Mulligan event is one not to be missed during Lent — not in the least because attendees get a dispensation from their Lenten sacrifices!
This year, SSSP honored the Knights of Columbus Queen of Martyrs Council 4567 with the Karen Beebe Arrow Award at their 11th Mulligan, held earlier this month. The packed crowd at American Martyrs O’Donnell Hall cheered on the Knights, who have been instrumental in the success of SSSP since 2013.
Over the years, the Knights have donated $15,000 per year to the organization, helping to change the lives of countless young student athletes in under-resourced Catholic schools throughout the Southland.
As part of the program, key individuals who have been directly impacted by the work of SSSP — educators, coaches, student-athletes, and program liaisons — were interviewed to give their own testimonies. Jeff Beland, the liaison for Resurrection School in Boyle Heights, told of his own first-hand experience. “It’s been an amazing thing to see,” he said. “The pride, the excitement from the kids, the parents, the school. Kids are getting their grades up so they can play, and they love showing off their jerseys.”
