Venerable Alphonse Gallegos will be honored during a special Mass at Mary Star of the Sea Church in Oxnard on June 24 at 3 p.m. The late bishop of Sacramento, Venerable Gallegos was a native of Los Angeles and is the unofficial patron of migrant workers.

Archbishop José H. Gomez will preside over the celebration, which will include the blessing and dedication of a statue in honor of the late bishop at St. Augustine Priory.

The bishop’s episcopal motto was “love one another” — a theme he lived through his strong stance on pro-life matters, his personal financing of tuition fees for Catholic students and his encouragement to Hispanic youths in impoverished areas to pursue a college education.
