With post-season and playoff competition in spring sports at hand, the CIF-Southern Section has posted the dates for qualifying and championship games, matches and meets to take place.
Baseball: Wild Card play will be held May 20-21, followed by First Round games May 22-23, Second Round May 27, Quarterfinals May 30, Semifinals June 3, and Finals June 6 (Divisions 1-3) at Dodger Stadium and June 7 (Division 4-7) at UC Riverside.
Softball: Wild Card play begins May 19, followed by First Round games May 20, Second Round May 22, Quarterfinals May 24, Semifinals May 27, and Finals May 30-31 at Barber Marine Corps Memorial Park, Irvine.
Swimming and Diving: Preliminaries and Finals will be held May 12-17 at Riverside Aquatics Complex, UC Riverside.
Track and Field: Preliminaries May 17 at four sites (Trabuco Hills HS, Division 1; Moorpark HS, Division 2; Estancia HS, Division 3; Carpinteria HS, Division 4). Championship Finals will be held May 24 and the Masters Meet May 30, both at Cerritos College Stadium. The State Meet will take place June 6-7 at Buchanan HS, Clovis.
Boys’ Volleyball: Wild Card play begins May 10, followed by First Round games May 13, Second Round May 15, Quarterfinals May 17, Semifinals May 21 and Finals May 24 at Cerritos College.
Boys’ Tennis: Team Wild Card play begins May 13, followed by First Round matches May 14, Second Round May 16, Quarterfinals May 19, Semifinals May 21 and Finals May 23 at Claremont Club. State Team Championship action takes place May 27-31 at Claremont Club. Individual Quarterfinals are scheduled June 6, and Semifinals and Finals June 7, all at Seal Beach Tennis Center.
Boys’ Golf: The Individual Regionals are May 12 at Canyon Crest Country Club, Skylinks Golf Course and River Ridge Golf Club. Division Team Championships are May 19 (at seven courses). The CIF-SS SCGA Team Qualifier and CIF-SS Individual Finals are May 27 at Mission Lakes Country Club. The Regional State Qualifier and SCGA Qualifying Tournament is June 2 at Brookside Golf Club.
Top 10 Rankings
MaxPreps’ Top 25 Southern California high school baseball teams included several local Catholic schools as this week’s play opened.
J.Serra of San Juan Capistrano (15-5 overall) ranked eighth, with Loyola of Los Angeles (15-2-1) ranked 20th and Bishop Alemany of Mission Hills (16-5-2) ranked 24th. Both Loyola and Alemany compete in the tough Mission League, where Harvard-Westlake of Studio City (17-4-1), the only non-Catholic school in the league, is ranked third in Southern California and tenth in the state.
The following are CIF-Southern Section top 10 baseball rankings as of May 5.
—Division 1: J.Serra first, Loyola second, Bishop Alemany tied for ninth.
—Division 3: Bishop Amat eighth.
—Division 5: Paraclete eighth.
—Division 6: Salesian seventh.
In Softball, the CIF-SS rankings through May 5 include:
—Division 1: Rosary (San Juan Capistrano) first.
—Division 3: St. Paul fifth.
—Division 5: Paraclete fourth.
—Division 6: Bellarmine-Jefferson first, Pomona Catholic second, St. Bonaventure third, Mary Star of the Sea fourth, Cantwell Sacred Heart of Mary fifth, St. Monica ninth.
And in Boys Volleyball, rankings through May 5 include:
—Division 1: Loyola fourth, St. John Bosco tenth.
—Division 4: Bishop Montgomery first, Cathedral second, La Salle third, Salesian fifth, Damien tenth.
—Division 5: Bishop Amat tenth.
Looking ahead: Fall and Winter schedules
The CIF-Southern Section has announced the schedule for fall and winter sports season-opening dates and playoffs for the 2014-15 school year. They include:
Football: first contest Aug. 29, last contest Nov. 7; playoffs open Nov. 14; finals Dec. 5-6.
Cross Country (Boys’ and Girls’): first contest Aug. 28, last contest Nov. 7; preliminaries Nov. 15; finals Nov. 22; state meet Nov. 29.
Girls’ Golf: first contest Sept. 1, last contest Oct. 23; team finals Oct. 30; individual finals Nov. 6; state meet Nov. 18.
Girls’ Tennis: first contest Sept. 1, last contest Oct. 31; team finals Nov. 14; individual finals Dec. 2-4.
