Given the go-ahead from Cardinal Roger Mahony, Kathie and Allen Lund and Margie and Tom Romano set about organizing the first such event in September 2005, although they had less than 100 days to pull it together. The Prayer Breakfast was an immediate success, and attendance has grown consistently each year, reaching more than 1,500 people for the sixth annual event last Sept. 21.The format --- the rosary led by the auxiliary bishops beginning at 6:30 a.m., followed by Mass at 7, the program and speaker at 8 and conclusion by 9 --- has proven attractive to local businesspeople and professional individuals. The day also attracts an increasing number of religious and laypeople, including groups of Catholic high school students. This year’s featured speaker is Carolyn Y. Woo, dean of the Mendoza College of Business at the University of Notre Dame and incoming president of Catholic Relief Services, effective Jan. 1. She has served as Mendoza College dean since 1997, during which time the school has achieved Bloomberg Businessweek’s No. 1 ranking among the nation’s undergraduate business programs, along with top rankings for its MBA, EMBA and Master of Science in Accountancy programs.Previous featured speakers at the event have included Jesuit Father Robert Spitzer, former president of Gonzaga University (2005); Archbishop George Niederauer of San Francisco (2006); Cardinal Donald Wuerl of Washington, D.C. (2007); Cardinal William Levada, Prefect of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith (2008); Carl Anderson, Knights of Columbus supreme knight (2009); and Archbishop Timothy Dolan of New York (2010).Online reservations for the 2011 event are now being accepted.
