Funeral Mass was celebrated March 21 at Holy Family Church, Killeen, County Mayo, Ireland, for Father James Francis O’Grady, 86, who died March 17.Born in Glenkeen, Louisburgh, County Mayo, he attended the Seminary of Our Lady of Angels in Niagara and was ordained on May 14, 1954. In the Archdiocese of Los Angeles he was associate pastor at St. Mary, Los Angeles; St. Anthony, El Segundo; St. Mariana de Paredes, Pico Rivera; St. Catherine of Siena, Reseda; St. Clement, Santa Monica; and Our Lady of the Assumption, Claremont.He served briefly as administrator at Our Lady of the Assumption before being named pastor of St. Gregory Nazianzen in Los Angeles (1973-83). He next ministered as pastor at St. Anthony in El Segundo, retiring from there as pastor emeritus in 2001, living privately in Glenkeen. Martin Long, Louisburgh (Kilgeever), County Mayo, Ireland.Sr. Kathleen Dorman, SCFuneral Mass was celebrated March 5 at Caritas Christi Motherhouse Chapel in Greensburg, Pa., for Sister of Charity of Seton Hill Kathleen (Mary Berenice) Dorman, 77, who died March 3.Born in Pittsburgh, she entered the congregation of the Sisters of Charity in 1953. She earned a bachelor’s degree in education from Seton Hill University and a master’s degree in early childhood education from Long Beach State University.Sister Dorman taught elementary school students in Pennsylvania, Washington and California. Her longest tenure was locally at St. Pancratius Church, Lakewood, where she served a total of 25 years during periods of 1967-72, 1975-85, and 1991-2001. She taught second grade at both St. Pancratius School and also for the parish religious education program during her final decade in the archdiocese. Beginning in 2001, she ministered in Tucson and Phoenix in school settings and parish ministry until she retired in 2011.St. Pancratius parishioners remember Sister Dorman’s fondness for her hamsters, corn dogs and Cadillac margaritas as well as her many-years staffing of the parish festival cake booth. Reflecting on her life as a Sister of Charity, Sister Dorman said: “Religious life is my whole life. To me, religious life means giving myself to the people with whom I work and with whom I live. I like to serve people, and religious life helps me to serve them in God’s name.” Sr. Margaret Mary FitzSimons, RSCFuneral Mass was celebrated March 15 at Holy Cross Cemetery’s Risen Christ Chapel in Culver City for Religious Sister of Charity Margaret Mary FitzSimons, 93, who died March 9 at Marycrest Manor, Culver City, after a lengthy illness.Born in Dublin, Ireland, she entered the Religious Sisters of Charity in 1938. Having served as a religious sister in Ireland and Scotland, she came to California in 1957, where she ministered as a teacher and/or principal in Long Beach, Van Nuys and Los Angeles until 1978.She changed fields from teaching to health care when she became administrator of Marycrest Manor, a skilled nursing facility in Culver City, serving there from 1978-88. She then worked in development for Marycrest Manor until 2003. In failing health, she became a resident of the nursing home in 2007.She is remembered by members of her congregation as a kind and gracious woman, proud of her Irish heritage, who gave her life in service to others during the over 75 years of her life she spent as a Religious Sister of Charity. SPFuneral Mass was celebrated March 26 at Mother Theodore Hall in St. Mary-of-the—Woods, Indiana, for Sister of Providence Estelle Scully, 86, who died March 20. In her 63 years as a Sister of Providence, she ministered 23 years in schools in Indiana, Illinois and California followed by two decades in diocesan communications and public relations.Locally, Sister Scully served at Marywood in Anaheim from 1960-61 and 1973-75. Always interested in world issues and an avid follower of cinematic art, Sister Scully enjoyed discussing these topics with others. Burial was at the cemetery of the Sisters of Providence in St. Mary-of-the-Woods.Emily RussoFuneral Mass was celebrated March 12 at Blessed Junipero Serra Church in Camarillo for Emily Russo, 89, who died March 4. Family survivors include her son, Father Frank Russo, Jr.
