The Adopt-A-Family family registration process started Sept. 6, but organizers of the Cathedral of our Lady of the Angels’ charity program are still seeking bilingual volunteers (Spanish/English) to help interview about 300 low-income families in the Skid Row area.“For 21 years, Adopt-A-Family has made it possible for struggling families with children to have a magical Christmas,” said Lydia Gamboa, associate director of the archdiocesan Mission Office that manages the annual activity. “But before the magic can take place on December 17, there are many things that need to be done.”Volunteer opportunities starts with evening interviews (5:30 p.m.-8:30 p.m.) twice a week in September and October, followed by sorting and packaging of food boxes throughout December, and gift collection and wrapping the two weekends before delivery on Dec. 17.Gamboa said this could be a great opportunity for senior students to complete the Christian service hours required by their curriculum.Volunteers for interviews meet at the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels (enter through Hill Street and park on P-2; parking will be validated) on Sept. 29, Oct. 4, Oct. 6, Oct. 11, Oct. 13, Oct. 17, Oct. 20 and Oct. 25. More dates for interviews in November will be provided as needed.Following are the dates and times for sorting and packaging of food boxes: Dec. 3, 9 a.m.-noon; Dec. 8, 5:30-8:30 p.m.; Dec. 10, 9 a.m.-noon; Dec. 12, 5:30-8:30 p.m.; and Dec. 13, 5:30-8:30 p.m.Dates for gift collection and wrapping will be provided in upcoming Tidings issues.
