League champions Santa Margarita (Trinity) and Bishop Montgomery (Del Rey) are among nine local Catholic school teams competing in the CIF-Southern Section boys’ team tennis playoffs that began May 8 with wild card play.
First round matches on May 9 include the following:
· Division 1: Loyola (Mission No. 2) vs. University (Pacific Coast No. 1).
· Division 2: St. Francis (Mission No. 3) vs. Canyon/Anaheim (North Hills No. 1); Santa Margarita (Trinity No. 1) vs. Sunny Hills (Freeway No. 2); St. Joseph/Santa Maria (Pac 8 No. 4) vs. Poly Pasadena (Prep No. 1); J.Serra (Trinity No. 2) vs. Tesoro (South Coast No. 2).
· Division 3: Damien (Baseline No. 3) vs. Mayfair (Suburban No. 2)
· Division 5: Bishop Montgomery (Del Rey No. 1) vs. Valley Christian/Cerritos (Olympic No. 2); Bishop Amat (Del Rey No. 2) vs. Garey (Miramonte No. 1); La Salle (Del Rey No. 3) vs. Santa Fe (Del Rio No. 2).
In May 8 Division 5 wild-card play, Bishop Amat beat Notre Dame/Riverside 12-6, and Oxnard defeated St. Bonaventure 11-7.
The team tennis event continues with second round matches May 11, quarterfinals May 14, semifinals May 16, and finals May 18 at Claremont Club, Claremont. The CIF Southern California Regional Team Tournament takes place at Claremont Club, with quarterfinals and semifinals May 25, and finals May 26.
