Barely a week after the two teams met for the CIF-Southern Section Division 1 title, Loyola High School earned a rematch with Huntington Beach for the CIF Southern California Regional Division 1 Volleyball Championship, to be played May 31, 7:30 p.m. at Cerritos College.

The Cubs, the No. 3 seed in the regional event, gained the final when they defeated Carson in the May 27 first round match, 25-15, 25-14, 25-27, 25-20, then beat No. 2 seed Buchanan (of Clovis) in the May 28 semifinals, 25-23, 25-22, 20-25, 18-25, 15-10.

Coached by Michael Boehle, Loyola enters the rematch 26-4. On May 24, Huntington Beach, the No. 1 seed and undefeated this season, beat Loyola in the CIF-SS Division 1 championship match in four sets.

In the Division 3 first round, No. 4 seed Bishop Montgomery defeated LACES, 25-6, 25-11, 25-14, but was beaten by No. 1 seed Laguna Beach on May 29 in the semifinals, 27-25, 25-13, 25-23.

In Division 2, No. 6 seed Cathedral lost to La Costa Canyon, 25-10, 25-21, 25-19, in the first round.

The CIF Southern California Regional Volleyball Championships (for which qualifying teams are consolidated into three divisions) began this week, with first round matches scheduled May 27, semifinals May 29 and finals May 31 at Cerritos College.
