Bosco prevails
The John Bosco Braves, the defending champions and the No. 1 seed in the Pac-5 division, showed again why they are a national powerhouse.
They opened up their potentially deep playoff run with a commanding 50-0 win over Cabrillo.
Senior Josh Rosen gave arguably his best performance of the year. Rosen was 11/18 passing for 288 yards and two touchdowns. He added a score on the ground as he led the Braves to victory.
Rosen’s 69-yard touchdown pass to Anselem Umeh made the score 30-0 and put the game out of reach.
Running Back Sean McGrew continued his tremendous season with 37 yards and two scores. After his second touchdown run, the starters were pulled, as the score was now 37-0.
Wide receiver Joey Chenoweth caught four passes for 134 yards and two touchdowns.
Bosco will travel to take on Norco (6-5 overall). Norco edged out St. Bonaventure, 71-70, in a shootout to advance to the quarterfinals.
Mission League’s dominating victories
The Mission League represented themselves nicely, with two of the three teams advancing to the quarterfinals.
Crespi defeated Santa Margarita quite handily, with a 45-13 victory.
After an 80-yard touchdown pass by Santa Margarita on the opening play of the game, Crespi scored 28 unanswered points, thanks to their multi-faceted running attack. T.J. Brumfield, who ran for 186 yards and four touchdowns, led this attack.
Crespi tacked on 388 total rushing yards and sailed to victory.
This Friday, Crespi hosts Long Beach Poly (10-1 overall) in a quarterfinal matchup.
Bishop Amat rolled over Lakewood, 47-18, thanks to a dominant performance by quarterback Ryder Ruiz.
Ruiz took over play calling duties for the injured Damian Garcia four weeks ago and hasn’t looked back since. He torched Lakewood’s secondary, throwing for 416 yards and four touchdowns.
Bishop Amat will be traveling to their quarterfinal game against JSerra (10-1 overall). JSerra beat Santiago, 55-16, to advance to this game.
St. Francis continues its dominance
Enjoying an undefeated season thus far, the St. Francis Golden Knights beat up on Mayfair, 49-14, in the opening round of the CIF-SS Southeast Division tournament.
St. Francis started the game off with a bang, with Areg Nazarian returning the opening kickoff 90 yards for a touchdown. Nazarian wowed again at the end of the second quarter when he juked his way to another kickoff return touchdown, this time for 95 yards.
Standout quarterback Jeremiah Martin threw for 184 yards and three touchdowns against Mayfair, but left in the third quarter due to injury. It was later confirmed that Martin suffered a broken collarbone.
This could be a huge blow to St. Francis, as this season, Martin has thrown for 2,424 yards and 29 touchdowns, without an interception in 11 games.
St. Francis will take on La Serna (9-2 overall) in a quarterfinal game. Last week, La Serna edged out Dominguez, 24-21.
