As part of Loyola Marymount University’s ongoing art exhibit, “Artist Proof Studio: A Journey of Reconciliation,” students of the school will perform “Some Mother’s Sons” on March 10 at 7 p.m.
The play, written by Mike van Graan, revolves around two South Africans’ violent experiences during apartheid, a period of racial segregation in South Africa. Prior to the performance, Kevin Wetmore, a professor and chair of Theatre Arts at LMU, will give a brief talk on post-apartheid South Africa and the HIV/AIDS epidemic.
The art exhibit, which began Jan. 24, explores the story of Artist Proof Studio, an arts organization founded in Johannesburg, South Africa, in 1990. The studio was founded shortly after Nelson Mendela’s release from prison during the ongoing fight to end segregation. The multi-racial artists sought to create a place of professional, artistic training while exploring the potential of the arts to foster social change.
The exhibit features renowned South African artists William Kentridge, Bevan de Wet and Philomen Hlunghwani, among many others.
The event is located at Loyola Marymount University, College of Communication and Fine Arts, 1 LMU Drive, Fritz B. Burns Fine Arts Center, Los Angeles.
