The annual Madonna Della Strada Celebration, to benefit the Ignatian Volunteer Corps and honoring individuals for their outreach efforts, will be held Oct. 13, 4-7 p.m. at Loyola Marymount University’s University Hall in Westchester. This year’s recipients of the Madonna Della Strada Award are Jane and Phil Argento of Holy Family Church in South Pasadena, who have served as volunteers in support of non-profit groups and restorative justice ministry, and Mary Agnes Erlandson, director of St. Margaret’s Center in Lennox, a program of Catholic Charities of Los Angeles.“The award honors lives that reflect the Ignatian values of direct service to the poor and of working and educating for a more just society,” said Anne Hansen, regional IVC director. The Ignatian Volunteer Corps serves those in need, through refugee and migration services, substance abuse recovery programs, community and parish outreach, and vocational education and job placement programs. The Madonna Della Strada Award is named for Santa Maria Della Strada (Italian for “Our Lady of the Way”), the first church that St. Ignatius and the early Jesuits obtained to serve the urban poor in Rome.
