On March 18, St. Gregory the Great School in Whittier won first place in the middle school category of the Los Angeles regional division of the 2017 U.S. Navy SeaPerch Underwater Robotics competition at Fullerton College. They also placed second in the Obstacle Course and Engineering Notebook portion of the competition.
Students Eric Ortega, Alexis Alvarez, Esabella Cruz and Matteo Nakano were able to successfully build and operate an underwater remotely-operated vehicle (ROV), maneuvering the ROV to pick up rings and cubes and place them on an underwater board. Next, the team will go on to compete at the U.S. Navy National SeaPerch competition at Georgia Tech University on May 19.
