Marymount and Mater Dei, the top two ranked teams in Division 1, will meet in the finals of the CIF-Southern Section girls’ volleyball playoffs Nov. 11 at Cerritos College, after posting semifinal victories Nov. 7.

Additionally, La Salle (Division 3) and St. Paul (Division 5) will play for CIF titles, but La Reina, the top-ranked team in D-5, fell to Sonora of La Habra in four sets.

In the Division 1 semifinals, Marymount (30-7) beat. No. 5 Redondo Union, 25-21, 25-23, 21-25, 25-22, while Mater Dei (33-5) eliminated No. 6 Corona Del Mar, 25-22, 25-14, 25-19.

Marymount, among the Southland’s most successful girls’ volleyball programs under coach Cari Klein, has won nine CIF titles, all since 2001, while Mater Dei, winner of four CIF titles, will play in its fifth straight divisional final, having won the 1AA title in 2013. The match is scheduled for 8 p.m. Saturday.

The Sailors and Monarchs have played once this season, with Marymount victorious in a hard-fought 21-25, 25-16, 25-19, 27-25 match played Oct. 12 in Westwood. However, at the beginning of this week, Mater Dei (Trinity League champ) was ranked No. 1 statewide among D-1 teams by MaxPreps, with Marymount (Mission League winner) fourth.

The Division 3 final (9 a.m. Saturday at Cerritos) will feature a La Salle team that has won 15 straight on its way to the Del Rey League title and a 27-5 record that includes a straight-set win over Sierra Canyon (31-7), its finals opponent, on Sept. 7 in Pasadena.

La Salle, D-3’s No. 1 team, outlasted No. 4 Sage Hill, 15-25, 25-17, 25-23, 23-25, 15-11, in the semifinals. The Lancers are seeking their first CIF crown since winning back-to-back 1A championships in 2012-13.

In Division 5’s semis, No. 2 St. Paul (25-10) rallied to beat No. 6 Quartz Hill, 25-21, 17-25, 19-25, 25-21, 15-11, while No. 4 Sonora (28-3) ousted La Reina, a finalist in 2014 and 2016, 25-21, 25-22, 20-25, 25-22.

St. Paul, which tied for third in the Del Rey League (behind La Salle), and Sonora, winner of the Freeway League, will play their final Saturday at 4:30 p.m. It is the first time the Swordsmen have reached a CIF final in girls’ volleyball.
