Known for his arm, Mater Dei quarterback Bryce Young showed his legs are equally dangerous weapons, rushing for four touchdowns in the Monarchs’ 34-18 victory over St. Frances Academy (Baltimore) on Sept. 13 in Bellflower.

Playing the second game of the evening at Parish Family Stadium (J.Serra defeated Milton of Georgia, 17-14, in the opener), Mater Dei mixed its attack nicely in the game pitting the nation’s top two high school teams as ranked in Maxpreps’ Xcellent 25 weekly survey.

Young threw for 250 yards (19 of 30) and ran for 104 more, with three of his TDs coming in the first half as the Monarchs raced to a 24-6 lead. After halftime, Mater Dei utilized just enough offense to keep St. Frances, which had won 26 straight, at bay.

The night before, St. John Bosco — on whose field the Saturday doubleheader took place — had its way with Our Lady of Good Counsel (Olney, Md.), 31-8 in the first of the Trinity League vs. USA Showcase series. The win landed the Braves a No. 2 national ranking, up from third and just behind Mater Dei, in Maxpreps’ Power rankings issued Sept. 15.

A host of “Catholic vs. Catholic” games played Sept. 13 saw Chaminade give Crespi its first loss, 55-14; Cathedral edged Loyola 17-13; Notre Dame (Sherman Oaks) downed Paraclete 22-7; Salesian stopped Verbum Dei 22-13; La Salle rolled over Cantwell Sacred Heart 55-15; and St. Bernard overwhelmed Bishop Montgomery 50-7.
