Cathedral High School won the CIF-Southern Section Division 4 boys’ cross country team championship Nov. 18, while Loyola’s Shane Bissell and J.Serra’s Anthony Grover earned individual titles in their respective divisions.

The Phantoms, with five runners in the top 24, took the D-4 team title with a combined time of 1:16:08, ahead of Bishop Amat (fifth) and J.Serra (seventh). All three schools qualified for the state team championships Nov. 25 at Woodward Park in Fresno.

Bissell, a Loyola senior, finished the three-mile Riverside City Course in 14:39.4, the best time of the day, to win the Division 1 individual title. Grover, a J.Serra sophomore, led a parade of Catholic school runners in the D-4 individual standings that included his teammate, junior Peter Herold, second, and Cathedral’s Tyriq Granillo (sophomore) and Alexander Cantu (senior) in third and fourth.

In girls’ team competition, Mayfield’s runner-up finish in the D-4 team event led Catholic school qualifiers for the state team title, with Bishop Amat fourth and J.Serra sixth. The first seven teams in each division automatically qualify for the state championships, as do a maximum of five individual finishers who are not members of qualifying teams and who finish in the first 20 places in their respective divisions.

Mayfield freshman Audrey Suarez placed second individually, and her teammate, junior McKenna Smith, was fourth. Also finishing strongly were J.Serra junior Nadia Tabrizi (7th), Notre Dame/Sherman Oaks senior Mariah Moro (9th), and Bishop Amat junior Olivia Paez and sophomore Morgan Rust (10th and 11th).

In boys’ D-5, junior Joseph Domingues St. Joseph/Santa Maria  was seventh, and Pomona Catholic was fifth in the girls’ D-5 team, event. The top results:
