A consistent team performance helped Mater Dei tie for first place in the CIF-Southern Section SCGA Boys’ Golf Team Qualifier, played May 16, at Goose Creek Golf Club, Jurupa Valley.

The Monarchs were led by junior Jaden Cantafio, whose 68 placed second in the individual portion of the tournament. Also helping Mater Dei to the victory were Andrew Hoekstra (70), Robert Keilch (73), Ryder Henares (76), and Ryan Pham and Robert Compean (77 each).

Mater Dei’s 364 tied Anaheim Discovery Christian. Another Orange County school, Servite of Anaheim, was third in the team event at 368, topped by Cameron Xiao (70) and Alax Hanz (73), and Loyola was fifth at 380, as Justin Lee and Brian Arnold Jr. eachs posted 71s.

Ivan Barahoina, Crespi freshman, tied for third individually at 70. The top four teams from the Team Qualifier, plus the top 28 individual players who are not part of a team already advancing, qualify for the CIF/SCGA Southern State Regional Championships on May 23 at Brookside Golf Course, Pasadena.

The State Championship will be played May 29 at Poppy Hills Golf Course, Pebble Beach.
