With post-season playoffs approaching soon, Bishop Montgomery continues to hold top spot of the Division 1 CIF-Southern Section boys’ basketball rankings, released Feb. 5.

The Knights (24-0 entering their regular season finale against Cantwell-Sacred Heart on Feb. 7) are followed in D-1 by Mater Dei (fourth), Crespi (fifth), Santa Margarita (sixth, up from seventh), Damien (ninth), St. John Bosco (tenth, down from eighth), and J.Serra (13th, down from 11th).

In Division 3AA, St. Anthony also remains No. 1, with St. Paul eighth (up from tenth, St. Francis 13th and Paraclete 16th.

Retaining their spots from last week’s rankings are Cathedral, 12th in 2AA, St. Bernard, second in 2A; Bishop Amat, third in 3A; and St. Bonaventure, tenth in 4AA. Mary Star dropped from second to third in 4A; Providence slipped from ninth to 11th in 5AAA; St. Pius X-St. Matthias Academy stayed second in 5AA; and St. Monica Academy remained fourth in 5A.

League play continues through Feb. 7, with playoffs beginning several days afterward.

 

Girls’ Basketball

The Division 1 poll showed slight changes: Mater Dei still fourth, Serra sixth (down from fifth), Chaminade still seventh, Alemany 11th, and Bishop Montgomery 12th.

In Division 2AA, J.Serra is sixth and St. Paul 13th (down from ninth); Bishop Amat is 16th in 2A; and St. Mary’s Academy remains third and La Salle ninth in 3A.

St. Bonaventure dipped from second to third in 4AA, and Providence slid from fourth to sixth in 4A

Santa Clara climbed from fourth to a tied for second, with Mayfield 11th in 5AAA; Mary Star went from second to third, followed by St. Pius X-St. Matthias (up to sixth, from ninth) and Sacred Heart (eighth) in 5AA; and Connelly is 11th (up one) in 5A.

 

Other sports

San Gabriel Mission remains No. 1 in Division 6 of the CIF-SS girls’ soccer rankings released Feb. 6. But J.Serra tumbled from first to fifth in D-1 as Santa Margarita --- which defeated the Lions 1-0 on Feb. 1 --- climbed from ninth to fourth.

Division 3 also saw changes, with Marymount rising from tenth to seventh, while Notre Dame/Sherman Oaks dropped from eighth to tenth. Bishop Montgomery fell from sixth to eighth in D-4, and St. Genevieve remained fourth in D-5.         

In boys’ soccer, Servite continued No. 2 in D-1, as did Loyola in third and Cathedral in fifth. Mater Dei (from seventh to sixth) and Santa Margarita (from tenth to ninth) each gained.

In D-6, Santa Clara rose from seventh to fourth, and St. Bonaventure is ninth in D-7.

Mater Dei is third in Division 1 of the girls’ water polo rankings, with Santa Margarita 11th. Rosary is fifth (up one) in D-3; St. Lucy’s fourth (down one) in D-4; Notre Dame/Sherman Oaks still seventh in D-5; and Marymount third and Villanova sixth (both unchanged) in D-7.
