St. Mel Parish in Woodland Hills is working with the Restorative Justice Office of the Los Angeles Archdiocese to provide ministry to youth in detention at Barry J. Nidorf Juvenile Hall in Sylmar.

Many of the kids in juvenile hall are misguided youths who have made some bad choices. Having been arrested and now in juvenile hall, they are separated from their family and friends. Often many feel forgotten. A good number of these youth have come from broken or dysfunctional homes and have not had the opportunity to benefit from the wisom and guidance of a caring, compassionate, non-judgemental adult.

Volunteers must be at least 21 years of age and available to attend an orientation and initial training. Visits typically last an hour and volunteers choose to come either on Wednesday evenings, Sunday mornings, or if their schedules permit, on both occasions.
