Following winning entries in the Los Angeles County Science Fair, Catholic school students scored again at the California State Science Fair, held April 31-May 1 at the California Science Center.Lauren Weetman, eighth grader from St. Martin of Tours School, Brentwood, won first place in Microbiology (Medical) for “Electrolyzed Water: Cleaning Our Environment into a Better Future? The Study of the Electrolysis of Water.”

St. John Fisher School, Rancho Palos Verdes, had multiple wins. Christopher Isozaki, sixth grader, won second place in Applied Mechanics and Structures for “Earthquake Safety Desk.” He also received the Junior Achievement Award from Raytheon Space & Airborne Systems. 

Will Abele, eighth grader, received second place in Product Science (Biological) with “Dissolution Resolution: How Do Beverages Affect the Speed of Dissolution of Pain Relievers?” Annie Benedict, seventh grader, won honorable mention in Aerodynamics/Hydrodynamics for “Effect of Cavern Depth on Water Ejection from a Simulated Oceanic Blowhole.” 

Sage Strieker, seventh grader from St. Timothy, West L.A., won second place in Environmental Science for “Murky Waters: The Impact of Oil Spills and Oil Spill Cleanup Dispersants on Gulf Coast Mangrove Habitats.”

Erik Godlewski, eighth grader from St. Anastasia School, Westchester, won third place with “It Burns! Do Our Clothes Protect Our Skin from Harmful Ultraviolet Rays?” in Product Science (Physical).

Sixth grader Anna de la Rosa from Our Lady of Refuge, Long Beach, won fourth place in Plant Biology with “Eggcellent Eggshells: How Eggshells Affect Plant Growth.”

Serena Sampson, seventh grader from Incarnation, Glendale, received an honorable mention medal in Microbiology (Medical) for “Got Bad Breath? The Effects of Polyphenol on Oral Bacterial Growth.”

Hunter Karr, eleventh grader from St. Monica High School, Santa Monica, received an honorable mention in Applied Mechanics & Structures for “Comparing the Efficiency of Two Wave Energy Converter Designs and Their Potential for the Santa Monica Bay.”

St. Martin of Tours seventh grader Sean McGovern won honorable mention in Mammalian Biology for “Do You Get a Buzz Out of Exercise? The Effect of Physical Activity and Exercise on Hand Steadiness.”

Sandy Ryan, sixth grader from Nativity, Torrance, won honorable mention in Electronics & Electromagnetics for “Shaking Up Some Energy: Electromagnetic Induction.”

Ramona Convent Secondary School (Alhambra) eighth grader Ileana Vasquez won honorable mention in Product Science (Physical) for “The Effect of Pill Coatings on Solubility.”

These young scholars were among 134 students from Los Angeles County selected to compete at the California State Science Fair based on their wins at the Los Angeles County Science Fair last month. The State Science Fair hosts 1,000 students from 421 schools in 34 California counties.
