St. John Bosco High School of Bellflower and Chaminade Preparatory High School of West Hills won state high school football championships in their respective divisions Dec. 21 at StubHub Center in Carson.
St. John Bosco completed an undefeated (16-0) season by defeating De La Salle 20-14 for the Open Division crown, and earning a national and state Number 1 ranking by MaxPreps. Perennial state power De La Salle had been unbeaten at 14-0 heading into the contest, with a 40-game winning streak.
Quarterback Josh Rosen threw for 200 yards and two touchdowns to Jaleel Wadood (60 and 7 yards), and the Braves withstood a late Spartan rally. Sophomore Sean McGrew ran for 143 yards on 24 carries.
Chaminade (14-2) rolled up a commanding halftime lead and romped to a 41-9 victory over previously unbeaten Enterprise High School of Redding in the Division II final. The Eagles --- who earned MaxPreps’ No. 4 year-end ranking in California --- broke a 3-3 tie with 21 unanswered second quarter points and 10 more in the third.
Donovan Lee had three interceptions, returning one for a TD, and scored on a 9-yard run from scrimmage. Quarterback Brad Kaaya completed 17 of 23 passes for 296 yards and two scores to Brayden Lenius and Brandyn Lee.
