Catholic Charities San Gabriel honors volunteers at May 12 event
Catholic Charities San Gabriel Region will host its 30th annual Volunteer Recognition and Dinner May 12, 6 p.m. at Quiet Cannon Center in Montebello.
About 200 volunteers will be recognized for their commitment to serving others, in their parishes and their communities. The evening will also shine a spotlight on Catholic and community leaders who are involved in the Giving Bank Ministry of Holy Family Church in South Pasadena and Macy’s Logistics and Operations Partners in Time (PIT) committee.
Established in 1977, the Giving Bank has worked closely with Catholic Charities for many years and provides emergency food, clothing and assistance to the needy in Pasadena, Alhambra and El Serreno.
Macy’s PIT committee members have shared their time and talents for the children and families of Catholic Charities and the San Juan Diego Center throughout the year.

Dominican Day/Walk-A-Thon at San Gabriel Mission High School
Students, faculty, staff and parents at San Gabriel Mission High School were joined recently by neighboring elementary schools when they laced up their walking shoes to support their Dominican roots at the annual Dominican Day/ Walk-A-Thon.
Walkers raised more than $4,000 to support the Dominican Sisters of Mission San Jose’s Adult Day Care Center. In addition to host San Gabriel Mission High, participants included San Gabriel Mission, Santa Teresita, Sacred Heart and St. Ignatius Elementary Schools.
St. Andrew’s to host benefit auction and fair trade sale in May.
St. Andrew Church in Pasadena will be busy in early May with two special events: “A Night in the Spirit of St. Andrew” on May 3 and the Fair Trade Sale on May 4.
“A Night in the Spirit of St. Andrew” is the second auction benefit for the church and will be held at the historic Pasadena residence of Carlos and Joan Javelera. The evening will features appetizers, light dinner and auction items with proceeds benefitting the more than 70 ministries at the parish.
Some auction items include: a private Sunday Mass for 20 guests in the sacristy chapel followed by a special BBQ prepared by Father Paul Sustayta, pastor, and an authentic paella dinner prepared by Father Jose Corral, associate pastor; a tour of the St. Andrew Church’s 140-foot-high bell tower; and a private baptism in the historical church baptistery. On May 5, St. Andrew’s Justice and Peace Committee will hold its second annual Fair Trade Sale at the school auditorium on Chestnut Street, 9 a.m.-3:30 p.m. Artisans from around the world will display their wares such as unique Mother’s Day gifts, jewelry and assorted houseware items.
Bosco Tech students ‘Relay for Life’
Don Bosco Technical Institute (Bosco Tech) and the City of Rosemead will host the American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life at the athletic track of Rosemead High School for a 24-hour event from 9 a.m. April 12 to 9 a.m. April 13.
“Our student leaders are working jointly with the City of Rosemead on the Relay,” said Miguel Flores, Bosco Tech coordinator of youth ministry. “Since both groups have experience putting on successful relays in the past, we’re working together on one larger event that we’re confident will have even farther reaching results. We’re so proud of the maturity and dedication of our young people who are committed to the American Cancer Society’s work.”

Holy Family offers Catholic Communication Toastmaster Club
Small group setting, office interactions, public speaking, interpersonal skills, talking to your spouse. For more than 10 years, the Catholic Communication Toastmaster Club at Holy Family in South Pasadena has helped the fearful, guided the unsure and promoted effective communications and leadership skills.
It’s one of the few Toastmaster organizations to be based at a Catholic Church, and according to President Mary Elizabeth Ohde, watching numerous club members grow and flourish is a constant joy.
“We are a fun group of people who really want to excel in our careers as well as personal situations,” she says. “People come and learn leadership skills and confidence, and that allows them to navigate the world better.”
Members discuss, deliver speeches, give feedback and have homework. “This is a way we can use our faith more effectively, to be better evangelists of the faith,” Ohde explains.
