Students at Ramona Convent in Alhambra will explore engineering through design challenges as part of the school’s new course, “Engineer Your World.” The innovative class will challenge students to develop the design skills that set engineers apart from other scientific and technical fields.
Student projects will include building a pinhole camera for handicapped people, an earthquake-safe building for India and a drone that can capture images from earth. The Catholic secondary school is partnering with the National Science Foundation and several other colleges in order to provide a comprehensive, yearlong engineering curriculum.
Aulikki Flagan, the program’s organizer, says, “This new course will give Ramona girls the skills they need to succeed in a male-dominated field and show them that they can change the world around them for the better.”
