Playoff brackets in boys’ volleyball and boys’ tennis were announced this week, with pairings for baseball and softball to be announced May 15.

Boys’ volleyball action begins in five divisions with first-round play on May 9, following wild-card action on May 8. The Division 1 matchups include Esperanza at No. 1 Loyola, Servite at Hillcrest, Santa Margarita at Mira Costa, Alemany at Corona Del Mar, Cathedral at Laguna Beach, and Dos Pueblos at Mater Dei.

Notre Dame hosts San Luis Obispo in Division 2 play, while Division 3 matches feature Alhambra at Bishop Diego, Damien at Laguna Blanca, Calvary Chapel at Paraclete, and Eastside at Bishop Montgomery.

In Division 4, Sage Hill is at St. Anthony, and La Salle is at Morro Bay. Division 5 includes Cantwell Sacred Heart hosting wild-card winner St. Genevieve, and wild-card winner St. Pius-St. Matthias Academy hosting Woodcrest Christian.

Boys’ tennis post-season play begins May 10, with Loyola at Arcadia and Northwood at Santa Margarita in Division 1; Chaminade at San Marcos in Division 2; Brea Olinda at J. Serra in Division 3; and Bishop Montgomery at Marshall, and Bishop Amat hosting a wild-card winner in Division 5. Wild-card participants included St. Joseph/Santa Maria (Division 3) and La Salle (Division 5).

Golf: Regional Results

In boys’ golf, individual regional tournaments were held May 8, with the top 20 players from each regional advancing to the CIF-SS Individual Championship on May 18 at Rancho San Marcos in Santa Barbara. Among the qualifiers (by region):

---Southern Region (at Skylinks Golf Course in Long Beach): Jack Rahnon, Servite, tied for fifth (69); Kyle Kinnane, Servite, tied for eighth (71); and Greg Merro, Santa Margarita, tied for 16th (73).

---Northern Division (at River Ridge CC in Oxnard): Parker Lestz, Loyola, tied for third (70); Connor Brown, Loyola, tied for sixth (71); William Draper, Chaminade, tied for 14th (73); and Trip Morris, Notre Dame, tied for 14th (73).

Team championships in seven divisions will be held May 15 and 16, with the top two teams from each advancing to the team qualifier on May 18. From there, the top 14 teams and 28 individuals who are not on one of the teams advance to the CIF/SCGA Southern State Regional Championship on May 25.

The CIF-SS Swimming and Diving Championships (boys’ and girls’, Divisions 1-4) will take place May 10-13 at the Riverside Aquatics Complex.

Preliminary competition in the CIF-SS Track and Field Championships (boys’ and girls’) are scheduled May 13 at four locations: Trabuco Hills HS (Division 1), Moorpark HS (Division 2), Estancia HS (Division 3) and Carpinteria HS (Division 4). Finals in all divisions will be held May 20 at Cerritos College, followed by the Masters Meet (state championship qualifying) on May 26 at Arcadia HS and the State Championships on June 2 and 3 at Buchanan HS in Clovis.

CIF-SS Polls 

Catholic teams are still among the leaders in the CIF-Southern Section weekly baseball and softball rankings, released May 8.

Baseball: Notre Dame is fourth and J.Serra tenth in the Division 1 rankings. St. John Bosco remains atop Division 2. Serra (Gardena) is sixth and Cathedral seventh in Division 4, and St. Anthony fifth in Division 6.

Softball: Mater Dei and Santa Margarita remained third in Division 1 and second in Division 2, respectively. Alemany leads Division 5, with Division 6’s top 10 featuring Notre Dame (second), St. Anthony (third), and Mary Star (eighth), and Division 7’s finding Connelly (eighth). Honorable mentions include Chaminade (Div. 5).

In the final polls before post-season play began this week, J. Serra (San Juan Capistrano) is third in Division 3 boys’ tennis, while Bishop Amat remained seventh in Division 5.

In boys’ volleyball, Loyola was first and Mater Dei sixth in Division 1; Notre Dame fourth in Division 2; and Bishop Montgomery seventh in Division 3.
