With one more week of regular season play remaining, the CIF-Southern Section weekly rankings, issued Oct. 30, show very little movement in any of the fall sports.
That includes football, where Mater Dei continues as No. 1 in Division 1, followed by St. John Bosco (third), Chaminade (fourth), Santa Margarita ninth and J.Serra tenth.
Paraclete and Bishop Diego likewise remain No. 1 in Division 5 and 6, respectively, with St. Joseph/Santa Maria ninth in D-5 and St. Paul fifth in D-6.
Cathedral is still eighth in Division 2 and unbeaten St. Francis fifth in D-3 prior to their showdown this week for the Angelus League title. St. Anthony is seventh in D-9, and Villanova Prep third in D-1 of eight-man football.
Girls’ Volleyball
The final girls’ volleyball poll of the regular season (playoffs start Oct. 31) find four Catholic schools atop their respective divisions, led by Marymount in Division 1, La Salle in Division 3, La Reina in Division 5 and Bishop Amat in Division 6.
Mater Dei is second in D-1, with Santa Margarita fourth and J.Serra eighth. Notre Dame/Sherman Oaks is sixth and St. Joseph/Lakewood tenth in D-2; Alemany, second in D-4; St. Paul, second in D-5; Providence/Burbank, fourth in D-8; and Sacred Heart, eighth in D-9.
Cross Country
Mayfield of Pasadena is tied for first with Foothill Technology of Ventura in Division 4 of the CIF girls’ cross country rankings that now include 16 schools in each division.
Other Catholic schools in D-4 include Bishop Amat (third), J.Serra (ninth), St. Lucy’s (12th), Immaculate Heart (14th) and Flintridge Sacred Heart Academy (15th).
Repeating from last week, Pomona Catholic is fifth, Sacred Heart sixth, St. Joseph (Santa Maria) 13th and St. Bonaventure 15th in Division 5. Mater Dei is again 15th in D-2 and Santa Margarita tenth in D-3.
In boys' cross country, Loyola is tied for third in Division 1, while in D-3 St. John Bosco is fourth and Servite 15th. Cathedral is tied for first, J.Serra fourth and Bishop Amat 13th in D-4, and St. Joseph/Santa Maria is eighth in D-5.
Other Sports
With playoffs beginning this week, Mater Dei ended the regular season on top of the Division 1 rankings in boys’ water polo, followed by Santa Margarita (fifth) and Loyola (eighth). Servite was seventh in D-3.
In girls’ tennis, the end-of-the-regular-season rankings show Chaminade sixth in D-3.
