The annual pilgrimage of the images of Our Lady of Guadalupe and St. Juan Diego, which began Nov. 1 in the Archdiocese of Los Angeles, will conclude Nov. 30 at Our Lady of Solitude Church, Los Angeles, in preparation for the 82nd annual procession on Dec. 1.The pilgrimage of the images began on All Saints Day at St. Marcellinus Church in the City of Commerce. They have since been featured at Our Lady of Lourdes, East Los Angeles; Lynwood Women’s Jail; and St. Linus, Norwalk.On Nov. 22-23, they will be at St. Hilary, Pico Rivera, then move to St. Lawrence of Brindisi, Compton (Nov. 27-28) and St. Andrew, Pasadena (Nov. 28-30). On Nov. 30, the images will arrive at Our Lady of Solitude, and the procession begins at approximately 11 a.m. Dec. 1, culminating at East Los Angeles College Stadium at around 12:30 for a presentation of the last apparition of the Virgin to Juan Diego by the Latino Theater Company. Mass with Archbishop José Gomez presiding and the auxiliary bishops and clergy in attendance follows at 1:30 p.m.The Our Lady of Guadalupe Procession is the oldest religious procession in Los Angeles. The Peregrina, a pilgrim image of the Virgin of Guadalupe, is a digital reproduction of the original image in Mexico City’s Basilica.The Virgin of Guadalupe appeared to St. Juan Diego — a Native American living in Mexico — in 1531. She left her image miraculously on his cloak, or tilma. For 481 years, her image has been a symbol of unity, peace, compassion and hope for people around the world. The image of the Virgin of Guadalupe was a gift from the Basilica in Mexico City.
