Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti hopes to keep families together by asking the Supreme Court to uphold President Obama’s Executive Actions on immigration. Garcetti made the announcement Dec. 4.
Garcetti is asking the Supreme Court to lift the federal court order, Texas v. United States, which overruled President Obama’s executive orders, thereby ending the expansion of Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) and suspending the implementation of Deferred Action for Parents of Americans and Lawful Permanent Residents.
On Nov. 20, 2014, President Obama gave the executive orders in part to expand the DACA program to people of any age who had entered the United States before the age of 16 and continuously lived in the United States since Jan. 1, 2010.
“National, state and local leaders across the country are asking the Supreme Court to review the decision in Texas v. United States because we have a special understanding of how generations of immigrants have contributed to the foundation of our cities and the strength of our nation,” said Garcetti.
“Partisan politics should not stand in the way of doing what is right for families who simply want to stay together. These are true American values, and it is our obligation to do all we can to preserve and protect family bonds.”
Garcetti’s decision stems from his work with Cities United for Immigration Action, a coalition he leads with New York Mayor Bill de Blasio.
