The Office for Worship and the Liturgical Commission of the Archdiocese of Los Angeles are sponsoring “Liturgy Conference 2013: Celebrating the Sacred Mysteries,” to be held June 28-29 at Bishop Alemany High School in Mission Hills. The early summer conference is in conjunction with the 50th anniversary of the Second Vatican Council’s promulgation of “Sacrosanctum Concilium,” the Constitution on the Sacred Liturgy, promulgated Dec. 4, 1963 — the first of 16 documents from the Council.As part of the Year of Faith proclaimed by Pope Benedict XVI, the conference will include workshops, worship experiences, and keynote addresses to be presented by nationally known experts in liturgy. Msgr. Kevin W. Irwin, a priest of the Archdiocese of New York, holds the Walter J. Schmitz, Chair of Liturgical Studies at The Catholic University of America, and this spring is teaching in Rome for the CUAbroad program. The author of 14 books, his most recent is “101 Questions and Answers on the Mass,” published in October, 2012 by Paulist Press.Msgr. Richard B. Hilgartner is executive director of the U.S. Bishops’ Secretariat for Divine Worship, and oversaw the introduction of the new translation of the Roman Missal, educating priests and lay people throughout the country about the changes. He was ordained in 1995 as a priest for the Archdiocese of Baltimore.Moderators will be Bob Hurd and Pedro Rubalcava, both well-known liturgical composers. The opening day, June 28, is for clergy and professional staff; June 29 is open to all parish liturgical volunteers. Cost is $55 for one day, or $90 for both days.
