The Tidings, Vida Nueva and the Los Angeles Catholic Directory took home a combined nine awards from the Catholic Press Association during the annual convention held in Buffalo, New York, June 24-26.

The Tidings took home first place honors in the Best Redesign category, while Archbishop José H. Gomez won first place for Best Regular Column for a Bishop or Archbishop for this column in Vida Nueva. The Catholic Directory won first place for the second time in as many years, with the Orange Diocese Directory taking home a third place finish.

“This directory contains a mountain of information, cleanly designed that invites reading,” judges said of the L.A. directory, applauding the placement of ads in the back.

R.W. Dellinger won two honorable mentions for his writing in the Individual Excellence and Best In-Depth/Special Reporting categories. Judges said of his story “Operation Progress: Transforming lives in Watts”: “The amount of time spent reporting this story was evident in the clear writing and the compelling presentation.”

Of the submission for individual excellence, in which he competed against writers from across the United States and Canada, judges said: “These are textbook examples of solid narrative journalism. Great storytelling!”

Victor Alemán’s photograph “You gave your children good ground for hope,” from the cover of the July 25, 2014, issue of The Tidings, won third place. Eber Huezo won third place for Vida Nueva’s “Las familias que huyan a Estados Unidos para salvar sus vidas” in the Best Coverage of Family category.
