Damien senior Zachary Shinnick won the boys’ 400 meter run, and the Santa Margarita girls 4x400-meter relay team captured first place at the CIF-SS Master’s Track and Field Meet, held May 26 at Arcadia High School.
They led a parade of local Catholic school athletes who qualified for the state high school track and field championships, scheduled June 2 and 3 at Buchanan High School in Clovis. Shinnick won the 400 with a time of 46.38, while the Santa Margarita relay team’s winning time was 3:47.82.
Other qualifiers included Jasmin Reed, Serra (Gardena) senior, who will compete in the girls’ 100 and 200-meter dashes and in the 4x100-meter relay. Reed’s 11.59 in the 100 was only .02 seconds out of first, and her 24.11 in the 200 was .16 seconds off the winning pace. She will be joined in the 100 by her her Serra teammate, sophomore Jazmyne Frost, who finished fourth.
Pre-set qualifying marks were used to determine who would qualify for the state championship meet. Some events resulted in many qualifiers; in others, only one or two.
Among state meet qualifiers in the girls’ events were Malina Yago, Marymount junior, third in the 800 meters; Louisville senior Allaida Patterson, third in shot put; the Santa Margarita pole vault triumvirate of seniors McKenna Caskey (second), Kate Thomas (third) and Erin Gerardo (seventh); and the Santa Margarita and Serra 4x100-meter relay teams (second and third, respectively).
In the boys’ events, state qualifiers included Blake Hennesay, Santa Margarita junior (fourth in 100 meters); Kyle Sandoval, Servite senior (seventh in the 110-meter hurdles); Paraclete’s 4x100 meter relay team (fourth); Earnest Sears, Alemany senior (third in high jump); Kylan Wilborn, Notre Dame senior (third in shot put); and Fernando Martinez, J.Serra senior (fifth in pole vault).
