On July 28, Sen. Tim Kaine formally accepted the Democratic vice presidential nomination, becoming Hilary Clinton’s running mate.
Following the news of the Catholic Virginian’s nomination, Catholic leaders are questioning his support of legislation that contradicts Church teachings, including “freedom of choice” for abortion, same-sex marriage and the ordination of women as priests.
“All of these positions are clearly contrary to well-established Catholic teachings,” Bishops Thomas Tobin of the Diocese of Providence, Rhode Island, said in a Facebook post.
Kaine referenced his Catholic faith in his acceptance speech, saying that his former Jesuit high school, Rockhurst High School, was where his faith became “vital” and inspired him to “fight for social justice.”
