The works of renowned contemporary-traditional artist Peter Adams will be spotlighted in the exhibition “Jerusalem Journey: Walking the Sacred Path,” on view at the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels from Oct. 21 to Feb. 17, 2013.Msgr. Kevin Kostelnik, Cathedral pastor, will open the exhibition Oct. 21 with a special prayer following the 10 a.m. Mass. The artist will also be present for the opening day. The studies and conceptual works to be featured in “Jerusalem Journey” will be on display in the Cathedral’s art chapel, adjacent to the North Ambulatory. The exhibition was curated by Sara Campbell Abdo, retired senior curator of the Norton Simon Museum.Known for his plein air landscapes, as well as dramatic figures and still lifes, Adams created the exhibition’s 18 paintings of Jerusalem and its sacred sites during a month-long painting trip to the Holy City in August 2010, during which he conducted research, including plein air studies, for a major commission for the new Our Savior Church at the University of Southern California’s Caruso Catholic Center. The Church is scheduled to open on Dec. 9.Because the commission involves the creation of a series of murals that represent the Fourteen Stations of the Cross — the events surrounding the crucifixion of Jesus — Adams painted inspirational studies as he followed the path that Christ traveled along the Via Dolorosa from trial to entombment. The artist also visited and painted in the Garden of Gethsemane, The Old City of Jerusalem, the Judean Desert, the Sea of Galilee and the Church of the Holy Sepulchre. Adams received special permission to spend a night locked inside the Church of the Holy Sepulchre — the crucifixion and burial site of Christ — to paint interior studies. During his overnight stay, the primary light sources for the creation of those works were candles and a miner’s lamp.Creating paintings that captured the spirit, light and atmosphere of Jerusalem were key considerations for Adams. “I spent many hours with the Franciscan fathers at the Monastery of St. Saviour located inside the city walls and many days with Father Angelo Beda Ison, who is considered the ‘ambassador’ of the Holy Land for the Catholic Church,” Adams said. “Their counsel gave me insight into the history, conflicts, culture and the divine peace that is felt today in Jerusalem.”Adams is represented by American Legacy Fine Arts, an art gallery in Pasadena that is dedicated to assisting collectors in the acquisition of contemporary-traditional fine art. The Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels is located at 555 W. Temple St., Los Angeles.
