Last month, seven sophomores from Bishop Montgomery High School (BMHS), Torrance, participated in the 2015 Hugh O’Brian Youth Leadership seminar for the Los Angeles region (HOBY-LA), a three-day leadership development program that brought together approximately 150 exceptional students from across the country.
Presented at California State Polytechnic University, Pomona (Cal Poly), HOBY-LA provided hands-on learning via critical thinking exercises, mentoring opportunities, panel discussions, goal setting and project-planning activities, all focused on “leadership for service” to their communities. Participating students were challenged to “make a difference” by completing 100 hours of service in their schools and/or local communities within 12 months after attending the seminar.
The BMHS students selected for this year’s seminar (based on their leadership roles in extra-curricular clubs and organizations) included Carlos Bernal, Natsuki Hishinuma, Angelo Pasco, Joshua Rhilinger, Simon Tran, Stephanie Trelease, Nora Ward and Emilie Bero (who was unable to attend due to an injury). The students represent a diverse array of BMHS groups, including Knightlife (the school newspaper), Key Club, National Honor Society, sports teams and more.
