Women seeking an alternative to abortion at California pregnancy centers must still be informed of free abortion services after the Assembly Bill 775 passed on May 26.
The bill states that if licensed health care facilities are unable to immediately enroll pregnant patients into the Family PACT, a family planning service available to low income residents, the clinic must inform each patient at the time of her visit of other publicly funded family planning and abortion resources in California, as well as how to “directly and efficiently access those resources.”
Backers of the bill include NARAL Pro-Choice and Planned Parenthood California. The bill passed 46-25.
California Catholic Conference strongly opposes the bill, saying the bill discriminates against those pregnancy centers that hold a pro-life viewpoint.
The conference “believes all life is sacred, they support programs which offer medical, economic and emotional support for pregnant women and children, so that they make life-affirming choices,” the Assembly Committee on Health writes.
