The 2015 CYO Girls Volleyball playoffs culminated in Championship Sunday at St. Paul High School in Santa Fe Springs on Nov. 8 with a rematch of last year’s championship between American Martyrs of Manhattan Beach, the No. 1 seed, against Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary of Pasadena, No. 2 seed and the defending champions.
American Martyrs had defeated Assumption in a tournament match earlier in the season. Each squad was loaded with talented players and solid coaching in this rubber match game to determine the top team in the L.A. Archdiocese.
American Martyrs led in the first game, holding off a fierce effort by Assumption, eventually winning the game by three. Assumption then got in gear in the second game, which was also a tight match as American Martyrs would not go quietly. The scoring was close throughout, and when one team pulled away, the other would fight back to tie the score. Eventually Assumption got the win 25-23.
Heading into the third and final game, a frenzied crowd of supporters cheered on their respective teams. Assumption and American Martyrs battled furiously as they each fought for an advantage.
With the score tight until the end, Assumption prevailed with a score of 15-13, and claimed their second consecutive CYO Championship. Both teams played with amazing spirit, enthusiasm and sportsmanship, and were supported by large groups of fans that rocked the St. Paul gym.
In the Third Place match, Holy Trinity of San Pedro faced St. Anastasia of Westchester, the tournament’s upstart team. Both teams put on a great display of volleyball, with a match that went three full games earned Holy Trinity the official third-place title.
CYO also introduced an invitational tournament this year, which included 16 teams from all over the region. Immaculate Conception of Los Angeles showed great determination with a young team and won the championship in three games over Notre Dame Academy of Los Angeles.
Both teams were excited to participate in CYO Championship Sunday and represented their schools with pride.
